Vintage Pinup original art

I've just finished a round of commissions, and this always seems to inspire me to do something a little different. I've been playing with the idea of doing a series of classic Pinups, both in large scale and ACEO size - so with that thought I started with this little ACEO based on a vintage Biba playing card image, titled "Biba Pinup #1"

I thought the painting was finished, and was very happy with it, until I took photos and realized that I just HAD to fix that Wilma Flinstone foot. Talk about forgetting to add a little shading!
I'll get on that right away and adjust the photos in my ArtFire shop. What pleases me the most is the shading on the red bustiere, and how the small little smile turned out without any over-working on my part. I was working with a mix of Quinacridone Red and Permanent Alizarin Crimson on the bodice, with French Ultramarine blue and Cerulean blue for the cushion. Originally, I had her wearing blue knickers but I decided it needed a little more sex appeal and layered Payne's Grey over it instead. Then I kept going with the little fringe details using small flat brush. Of course I had to embellish the top also! What do you think?

As usual, I have listed this on ArtFire first. If it is still available after a few days I'll post it on Etsy.

I find Pinup art so interesting to create. Take a normal, everyday nude pose for example - make the head a little smaller, make the legs longer, adjust the curve factor and then have fun adding itty bitty clothes. It's almost like playing with paper dolls!

It's been a little while, but I've added a new original ACEO painting to my "kittens on a pillow" series featuring ink and watercolor on 140lb cold press Arches watercolor paper.

You can find it only on ArtFire to start with - I post all my new ACEO paintings there first!

Hummingbird ACEO

Hummingbird ACEO painting

I love painting birds.

Acquiring a new camera this year has allowed me to capture some wonderful reference photos to work from, and I assure you I'll be painting more robins, jays and cardinals soon.

But it was on my honeymoon in St. Lucia several years ago that I was lucky enough to snap a few hummingbird shots, enabling me to reference their beautiful flight patterns.

I've painted a few original hummingbird ACEO watercolors this year, and here's a new one featuring iridescent Daniel Smith paint over the green wings.

I have this one listed on eBay for a change - I haven't had an auction in a while, so we'll see if anyone still remembers me over there! The starting bid is $9.99 - you can find it here if you'd like to place a bid.

Let me know what you think :-)

Good luck!

Hannibal and an ArtFire Sale - what a yummy combo!

Just before I jetted off to Paris, I had a rather unique commission: Two ACEO paintings depicting scenes involving Hannibal Lecter.

To make things even stranger, the paintings were commissioned by a client in Paris! Ah, sweet coincidence.

So today I have just a quick blog to let everyone know that I'm having a little sale.

I've marked down everything in my ArtFire shop by 15% until Sunday night, June 14 2009. That includes commissions too! ArtFire makes it very easy to put items in my shop on sale (Etsy = not-so-easy) so you'll probably find that sales happen more often over at ArtFire.

It's kind of my "back to work" sale, now that the Paris glow is starting to ebb a bit. On that note, I bought myself a Tassimo espresso machine last week to keep the "Cafe Ambience" going around here.

I haven't listed giclee prints of this yet, but please do send me a note if you're interested. Strangely, my Dad jumped on the bandwagon and wants an 8x10!

Back from Paris and feeling refreshed!

I'm happy to be back in my studio after spending an unforgettable 4 days in Paris - but of course now I'm anxious to plan my next trip!

We had an amazing time, and the weather was fabulous - clear blue skies, perfect for walking around this beautiful city. Here I am after spending the morning walking through the Tuileries Gardens, riding the carousel, and stopping for a photo opportunity outside the Musee de Louvre.

We stayed in the village of Montmartre and enjoyed breathtaking views of Sacre Coeur from our Rooftop Vista apartment. This photo was taken from the kitchen window!

Now that I'm back in the studio, I've reopened my Etsy shop and will be taking Portrait Commissions again. Turnaround time is presently about 4-6 weeks, as I have a little bit of a waiting list.

Nice to come home and have work waiting for me.
